Walker Hall: Wellness Community Application
MISSION OF THE WALKER HALL WELLNESS COMMUNITY: Students and staff committed to living and promoting a life style of wellness will reside in this community and participate in its programs.
WELLNESS AT ALLEGHENY COLLEGE
Drugs and alcohol are among the on-going challenges to health and wellness in the lives of students. Accordingly, the Wellness Program at Allegheny College seeks to minimize high risk drinking, to empower students who choose not to drink, and to understand how choices related to alcohol affect the college community. Our goal is to create a healthy, safe and caring community where everyone has an opportunity to be successful.
The concept of wellness, however, is interpreted broadly at Allegheny and focuses on other topics in addition to alcohol. Through a variety of programs and services we seek to provide information and options for students about the importance of making positive decisions and to understand how those choices affect the college community. Our approach to wellness is holistic. We promote the various dimensions of personal wellness including the importance of caring about others*. Co-curricular workshops on a variety of topics are offered throughout the year, information about wellness and healthy choices is made accessible on campus, and students are routinely challenged through dialogue about their values, ethics and decision making. Put another way, we focus on both the personal and social responsibility to be healthy citizens.
*Traditional dimensions of Wellness include: Personal, Social, Emotional, Intellectual, Spiritual, and Occupational. To view descriptions of each of these dimensions, visit our website, at http://sites.allegheny.edu/deanofstudents/wellness-education/
